DutiesA volunteer Big Brother will be a positive role model and mentor to a child (Little Brother). Volunteers will see their Little Brother on a consistent basis, usually once a week. The volunteer and child will participate in fun activities such as sports, biking, games, watching movies, building models, etc. Volunteers and children are matched based on interests, location and age preference.

BenefitsVolunteers receive training in child safety, child development and communication skills. The experience gained presents an opportunity for personal/career development and satisfaction as a result of experiences, training opportunities and support. Volunteers also feel a sense of fulfillment because they have provided a safe, supportive, non-judgemental environment for a child and may develop a lifelong friendship. 
For the child, this relationship will provide acceptance, guidance, support, companionship and new experiences.

The ability to be a great listener is also highly encouraged.
Commitment LengthLong Term (More than 1 year) - A commitment of at least 18 months is required. ; In order for the children to enjoy the long-term benefits of a mentor this opportunity requires a long-term commitment. Time must be spent with the Little Brother on a regular and consistent basis.

Dates and TimesVolunteers, Little Brothers and parents arrange times to get together based on their own schedules. The emphasis is on consistency, not specific days or times.

TransportationNear public transit ; Access to a vehicle is preferable but not necessary; the office is located on a bus route.
CostLow-cost or no cost activities are strongly encouraged. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph often receives tickets, discounts or coupons for volunteers and their Little Brothers.
