Description & Services
Description (Service)Temporary income and employment assistance for low income individuals and families in immediate financial need  
* requires a financial assessment to determine eligibility for services  
Employment Supports and Benefits  
* caseworkers work closely with participants to develop individualized action plans that address unique needs * caseworkers guide participants through each stage and encourage them to stay on track * employment benefits to assist clients in finding and starting a job; possible assistance with costs such as transportation, childcare, course fees, uniforms and safety equipment 
Additional employment supports include:  
* basic educational upgrading * English as a second language training * job specific skills training * job search assistance (résumé writing, interview preparation) * access to volunteer and employment placements  
Discretionary Benefits for recipients of Ontario Works assistance, or Ontario Disability Support Program assistance may include:  
Housing Stability Program (HSP)  
Funding can be provided for housing-related deposits * last month’s rent and required utility deposits * housing, fuel and hydro arrears 
* for people who are homeless to obtain and retain housing or for people at risk of homelessness to remain housed 
* maximum benefit can be accessed once in any 24 month period  
Funeral and Burials  
May be able to help with cost of funeral, burial or cremation * all requests for funeral and burial assistance are considered on case-by-case basis.  
Other programs include: 
* Learning, Earning and Parenting (LEAP) - for young parents, ages 16-25 
* Self-Employment - training and supports to operate a business; delivered in partnership with Guelph Wellington Business Enterprise Centre (GWBEC) 
* Life Skills Case Management - intensive support for those who are experiencing issues related to addictions or mental health
Sup. DescriptionCanada Learning Bond (CLB) 
Ontario Works recipients with children born after Dec 31, 2003 are eligible to apply. 
* money is placed into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) by the Government of Canada for an eligible child's education after high school 
Housing Stability Program (HSP)  
Local benefit created out of funding provided to municipalities through the Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI) from the Ministry of Municipalities and Affordable Housing (MMAH) (as of Jan 2013) 
Services for Employers 
OW employment specialists work with employers to find employees with appropriate skills and experience * advertises position, screens potential applicants, provides training supports and subsidies (contact Mark Granger, Employment Specialist, 519-823-7887, ext 3492)

Youth and adults 18 years and older in financial need * employable youth 16-17 years in financial need who cannot live at home but are attending school or seeking employment (funds must be managed by a trustee, guardian or agency) * financial need is determined by a review of income, liquid assets and living expenses
ApplicationIn person, by phone or online at www.ontario.ca/socialassistance. An appointment will be scheduled to meet with a Caseworker for a verification interview if potential eligibility is determined.
